What are server names?

A server name consists of program or the computer server which would implement the name service protocol. This would usually map a recognizable human identifier for a host to the computer recognizable identifier also vice-verse. The internet name servers have implemented the Domain Name System protocol. One can also find server names on Microsoft windows too.

Picking a scheme that would scale

Scalability is mostly the aspect for naming the scheme that is most likely to bite one down road. What would happen to the Seven Dwarves naming schemes if in future you happen to add an eighth name. While choosing a name scheme, keep in mind the number of users that would be using it. Make sure that there are plenty of spare names in your server to avoid any future problems.

Choose names on what you know

If you are a history buff then you can name the machine after some major rulers or if you are a music buff then you can name after the musicians. Pick user friendly names

Even if you the only user accessing the servers by name then you should try choosing the names that are easy to spell and are short. You will require typing these names for several times. Shorter and simple names would ensure fewer headaches and typos when you are required to long on at midnight.
