History of Nominet

Nominet is basically the registry for every domain name that ends with .uk and is located in United Kingdom. This Nominet began their registration of domain name from the 1st of August of 1996 and today it is recognized officially by the government of UK as the manager of the Nominet of .uk TLD.

This particular internet service was actually established during the 1970s and at that time it was called as Arpenet. A parallel system called the Joint Academic Network or JANET was also set up in the UK during the 1980s which was mainly used by the Ministry of Defense, Universities and the research organizations in order to electronically communicate with other people. During the early 1990s the rising internet service providers like BT, Pipex and Deon got involved with network thereby providing domain names to customers with a commercial basis. However when the use of e-mail service grew the organizations that were involved with network started up a Voluntary Naming Committee in order to examine all the applications for the Domain Name.

In the year 1664 during the advent of World Wide Web the commercial potential of the internet was largely being recognized and it was not too long before the Naming Committee was not capable to deal with the large request for new domain names including the momentums to set up the professional registry also grew. Apart from this there was also much deliberation about what type of the corporation should the registry be. However the options to set up a private or Limited Company by guarantee or the charity was discarded. This led to the establishment of Nominet which was during the year 1996. This Nominet domain name registry company was set as a non profit company that was limited through guarantee.
