ICANN is Internet Corporation Assigned Names and Numbers. It has its headquarters in Marina Del Rey in California. ICANN is a California based non-profitable corporation which was created back on 18 September, 1988. It was created for overseeing the number of internet related tasks that were previously practiced directly by some other organizations on behalf of the U.S. Government.

The ICANN tasks would include managing all assignments of the IP addresses and the domain names. Till date, most of the work is concerned to the introduction of some new generic domains of top level. The top level ICANN technical work is referred to as IANA function. Most of the ICANN is concerned to the defining policy. ICANN signed one new agreement on September 29, 2006 with United States Department of Commerce which is one step close to the full management of internet system of the centrally coordinated identifiers via the multi stakeholder model of the consultation that the ICANN would represent. Paul Twomey has been the president and CEO of the ICANN since the March 27, 2003. Peter Dengate Thrush became the ICANN board of director’s chairman replacing Vint Cerf on November 3, 2007.

At the present, ICANN is formally organized to become a non-profitable corporation for the public and the charity purpose under the California law. The Board of directors which consists of six representatives and the sub groups dealing wit the specific section of policies under the ICANN purview mange it magnificently.  Currently there are three supporting organizations to ICANN, Generic Names Supporting Organization deals with the policy making for the top level generic domains. The second on is the Country Code Names Supporting Organization that deals with the policy of the country code which are of top level domains. The third organization is the Address Supporting Organization which deals with the policy of making all IP addresses.
